Youth Support Services

Parent

A Lifeline for Young New Americans

We offer essential support services to vulnerable youth, including those detained at the border who have family ties to Minnesota, and foreign-born young people who are survivors of or at risk of sex trafficking and exploitation.

With over 100 years of experience serving refugees and immigrants, the International Institute of Minnesota is especially equipped to support the unique needs of New American youth.

How We Help

Restoring Family Connections and Rebuilding Lives

We provide home studies and post-release services for unaccompanied children who are referred to us through the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s Unaccompanied Children program.

Our staff assists with healthcare, school enrollment, food support services, mental health services, immigration and legal aid, community orientation and other connections to local resources for children after they are released from custody.

Providing Specialized Support for Exploited Youth

In Minnesota, sexually exploited youth are seen as survivors, not criminals, thanks to the 2014 Safe Harbor Law. This created a victim-centered, trauma-informed network of services, safe housing and regional navigators to connect youth to support.

As a Safe Harbor provider since 2020, we offer critical services tailored to meet the needs of immigrant youth under age 24 who have survived or are vulnerable to sexual exploitation and trafficking. Our compassionate staff provide culturally responsive one-on-one case management and access to educational programs to help clients stabilize and heal.

While Safe Harbor serves all youth in Minnesota, we specialize in supporting immigrant youth, who often face unique challenges related to legal status, language and cultural differences.
